How do you know your Manuka Honey is a real Manuka Honey

Manuka honey is unlike any other type of honey. Long ago, scientists investigating its medicinal properties documented Manuka honey’s unusual bioactive nature. After years more research and technological advances, they discovered Manuka honey’s distinctive bioactive properties were caused by its unusual concentrations of methylglyoxal, or MGO. Everyday honey might have MGO concentrations of 2-5mg of MGO per kg. Manuka honey houses as much as 500 times that amount.

The relatively high demand for Manuka honey – alongside its rarity – sometimes causes shortages.

New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) introduced a clear cut legal definition of Manuka honey. Today’s definition states that four (4) chemical markers from nectar and one DNA marker from Manuka pollen must be at a certain level to meet overseas export requirements for Manuka honey. The rules came into effect in February 2018.

At Helena Health, we welcome the definition and regulation. All our Manuka honey either meets or exceeds the MPI’s definition, and we test every batch of our Manuka honey to be sure of it.

We test every batch

Every. Single. Batch.

We want our Manuka honey to do everything our customers expect and more, so we test every batch in partnership with the independent testing facilities. This reveals the MGO concentration of each batch, which we report on each of our honey jars’ labels.

Each jar of our honey also receives a batch number. The number means we can trace your honey back to its birthplace, on request!

Along with MGO content and Manuka Honey Markers we also test for:

  • HMF

  • DHA

  • Foreign Matter

  • Tutin

  • Glyphosate

  • C4 sugars (AOAC)

  • Diastase

  • +Microbiology test

One can easily see how much care and attention is given to each batch of Manuka Honey before it is ready for our consumers world wide to enjoy.

Distributing our Manuka honey worldwide

Finally, it’s time to get our Manuka honey to you. We work with carefully selected distribution partners, both domestically and internationally, who have all been chosen on the strength of their reputation. This ensures our honey is as cared for during distribution as it is in production. The end result? Superior Manuka honey, quality assured every time.
