New Zealand Propolis

Propolis is a natural substance made by bees. Bees use it to seal, sterilise and protect their hives from infection, and they’ve done so for millions of years.

What is propolis?

Propolis is a strong antioxidant created by bees from natural resin – defence system of the plants.

People have been using propolis for centuries as a natural product to support their health and well-being

How
bees make propolis

Most people know honey bees spend their summers gathering nectar to make honey. But nectar isn’t all bees gather up: while they’re out and about, the bees collect natural resins from tree bark and sticky plant buds.

The bees mix the natural resins with beeswax and their own enzymes to make propolis, a powerful substance rich in bioactive compounds with powerful antimicrobial properties. Propolis is then used by bees to seal every hole, block every crack in the bee hive and cover all the foreign objects to protect the hive from infections and viruses.

Benefits of propolis

Antimicrobial,
anaesthetic and wound healing
properties of propolis have been known and highly
appreciated by ancient Greek, Roman and Arab medical practitioners for centuries. Hippocrates is said to have used propolis to cure wounds and ulcers both external and internal.

Modern science is re-discovering propolis health properties by producing evidence to show  propolis can help balance the immune system as well as providing powerful natural antioxidant protection.

Benefits of CAPE
Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester

CAPE is a natural bioactive compound. It naturally occurs in some plants and can be acquired from propolis. Since 1988 numerous scientific papers have been published showing the health benefits of CAPE.
Researchers have shown CAPE to be one of the key compounds responsible for propolis’s health properties.

Properties-of-propolis-icon.png

There have been more than 180 different bioactive compounds identified in propolis.

However, the composition of propolis varies considerably from region to region along with vegetation, climatic conditions, from season to season, and from hive to hive.

Studies demonstrated New Zealand propolis contains exceptionally high levels of 5 major beneficial flavonoids along with phenol acids and esters in comparison to other countries.
Our test results show at least 120mg of 5 major flavonoids per 1 ml of propolis liquid.

In particular, caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is found at high levels compared to other countries.

Researchers have shown CAPE to be the key compound responsible for propolis’s health properties. Consequently, New Zealand
CAPE-rich propolis
has become of great interest to researchers.

Why New Zealand
propolis is
special

Vegetation-icon.png

Climatic-Environment-icon.png

New Zealand’s plants and trees are exposed to high ultraviolet concentration requiring them to produce elevated concentrations of bioactive compounds in their resin, nectar, buds and leaves to encourage symbiotic relationships to benefit both them the host and other species.

80% of the plants and trees in New Zealand are native and not found elsewhere. This is due to New Zealand being an island nation for
23 million years, 2000 km from its nearest neighbour.
Plants and trees have evolved their own defence systems to survive from environmental challenges.
